Start with the lights, garland is next, then the bulbs. Add a personal touch to make uniquely yours, like ribbons, flowers, (once I used small stuffed snowmen).

I'm guessing that the word trim is what makes the sentence confusing. To trim usually means cut to desired length, in this case, on the christmas tree, it means to add all the trimmings, glitz or decorations.

To "trim" a tree means to decorate it. If you'd like to shorten it if it is too tall, use a saw...
