Chips here in Australia. Fries in America. But has anyone noticed how our kids are starting to call them Fries? and using other Americanisms?

Chipps, if your talking in English, Fries if your a Yank

the term arises from us calling the Belguim invention of the Chippd potatoe, a new veg from the new world, as french style fries, because at the time, Belguim was part of Spainish controlled Holland. We were at war with the spanish, so they arrived via the French.

thus we ate french style fries. But lets face it, french fries are now the thin fat loaded varities, and good old doorstep chunky chips are chips.

The British call them "chips", Americans call them "fries". What they are called elsewhere in the English-speaking world, I don't know. Probably "fries" in Canada, but I'm not sure.

This really depends on where your from. They both refer to the same thing...but, the British, and the majority of their colonies call them chips. On the other hand, America, calls them fries.

i think it depends where you come from. They are Chips in the Uk and Fries in America, and i think Americans call crisps, chips, all very confusing!

If you are talking about a deep fat fried or oven cooked long chunky section of potato, they are Chips in the UK, if you are talking about pulped potato formed into thin long sections they are fries in the USA and in the UK, whereas chips in the USA are thin fried pieces of potato with flavouring and preservatives in a sealed bag, which out of interest are crisps in teh UK. Yawn- not sure about the rest of the world
