hi, i was just wondering what are some things you can do/write/mention in your college application that will get the admissions deans captivated in your application, or in other words, giving you more leeway to be able to squeeze your way into the school, so to speak. and is it true that if you are determined and proactive enough, and you've got the grades and everything else, you CAN indeed manage to get into your #1 choice school? and does early decision really increase your chances of getting an acceptance? and what if you get rejected from early decision...does your application get reconsidered in the "regular admissions" pool of applicants???

You've got a lot of issues all packed into your question. Early decision can be helpful. Be aware that there are different types of early admission at different schools. There's early decision, early action, single choice early action, and various others. Here's an article about choosing whether or not to apply early: http://admitspit.wordpress.com/2006/09/14/ellens-early-decision-predicament/
Also, you may want to take a look at admissions statistics for different schools. I'm not sure what types of schools you are aiming for, but here's a really comprehensive list for admissions statistics for some of the US's top schools. It also shows acceptances early vs. regular decision: http://admitspit.wordpress.com/2006/09/18/admission-statistics-for-top-colleges-2006/
If you do get rejected from Early admission, then your application does not get thrown back into the regular pool... if you are Deferred, that's the term for when you aren't accepted early, but aren't really rejected either. You get thrown back into the pile.

Well, first of all maintain good grades and get good test scores. If the college has rolling admissions, apply ASAP. Try to be in a few diverse clubs, and get a leadership role in the club if possible. Do some community service for a variety of organizations. If your college asks for an esaay, try to answer the prompt with something that not many other people do. If there is no prompt, tell them what is unique about you and why you would fit well at their university.

It all depends on the school. Talk about any volunteer or paid work you've done. Think outside the box - admissions officers have heard the the sports stories a thousand times. Bring a fresh angle. Point out what makes you different. If you have sufficient grades, test scores, activities, well-written essays, etc., it is possible to get into your #1 school; I did. Though again it all depends on how competitive that school is.
