A covenant is similar to an agreement or compact, but the difference is more akin to the difference between a cup of water and the Pacific Ocean. A covenant is a promise to the nth degree, used in religious associations to convey strength of bond or meaning. Also, a covenant implies an iron-clad agreement to the dictates. In other words, you wouldn't make a 'covenant' with your brother to never fight again if you knew, or even guessed, that you would be unable to maintain your end of the bargain. Breaking a covenant, likewise, implies threats of dire and lasting consequence, which is why it is reserved for compacts of a spiritual nature. Buddha promising to never enter paradise until everyone could enter simply by stating his name is another example of a covenant, although this is an example of a private covenant.

A covenant is the old term for what we would consider a contract. There were many types, and many different ways of sealing covenants. Some required certain sacrifices, others the exchanging of property, others just a monument and a shared meal. It all depended on how serious the occasion was for the covenant, and how long it was supposed to last.

A covenant is an agreement or contract. In religion, probably the most famous covenant is the one said to have been agreed to by Abraham with God, on behalf of the future Jewish people. A modern example would be any contract between two businesses or entities; also, some housing developments, condos, etc., have covenants which detail certain restrictions and requirements on property owners.

A solemn contract - a deal. Usually used in religious texts, like the Lord made a covenant with man to never flood the earth again, and as a sign of that covenant He shall put a rainbow in the sky every time it rains.

It used to be a gentlemans agreement. They entered into a covenant to achieve a common goal or, for example, to watch each others backs in those cut-throat mediaeval times.
