I used a flexible plastic bar with threaded beads on each end, and it worked great. (Two pregnancies.)
Those can take a while to find, though. While I was looking, I went into the local piercing parlor and asked the piercer to make me something. It wasn't pretty, but it did the job.
Don't listen to all the naysayers. If you've had your piercing a long time (I'd had mine for 8 years before my first pregnancy) and you haven't had any problems with it, you'll probably do fine.
Your doctor will probably make you take it out for the delivery, though. (Actually, my first delivery was an emergency C-section, and they said as long as the jewelry wasn't in the surgical field (which it wasn't), it wasn't a problem.) Second time around was a scheduled C-section, and they made me remove it.

Most women have to remove the jewelry during the 3rd trimester due to the swelling. Whether or not it stays open depends on how long you had it. For example, if you get it at 15, and get pregnant in your 20's or 30's, yeah, it will probably stay open. If you get it at 22 and get pregnant at 24, maybe, maybe not. What some women do is put a piece of fishing line in the hole to keep it open, and once they have the baby, they go back to their piercer, who gently re-stretches the piercing so jewelry can be inserted. There are also flexiable pieces of jewelry that work for some people. Also, ignore the first guy's comments. He's a judgemental idiot. I've had my navel pierced for 5 years, and I am doing rather well in life. Hell, I don't even WANT any kids, let alone have them to get on welfare.

It does depend on how large your belly gets, and every woman varies. If your belly button pops out or goes flat...no, it would risk being torn and probably hurt. Also, you run a risk of infection because it will keep tearing and you'll have an open wound there. My doctor recommended to take it out and leave it alone, but my friend's doc told her it was fine (but he also told her nipple rings were fine during breast feeding!) but she ended up taking it out at about 6 months because it hurt she said. GOOD LUCK!

My belly button never popped out when I was pregnant, it just went flat, I wore my ring untill it was nearly flat, about 7 months, and after I had the baby, I just poked it back through, sorta hurt a little, and it took a little pushing but its back to normal now.

I took mine out when I started to strecth. I have one in the top and one in the bottom, the bottom one has been in for years. It hasn't closed up yet and I took it out almost 6 months ago. My belly button has popped out too, I don't see how I could get a ring in there now :-)

They have such a thing called pregnancy belly button rings. I looked it up when I became pregnant and it says you can use em and it won't mess up your belly button but when I noticed it was time for one couldn't find one anywhere but online. so i just took mine out. it can be re-pierced. as you know its not painful at all. i also thought about the fact that my belly might look horrible so i might not want it anyway.

I would possibly try to thread some fishing line (make sure sterile) through the hole, and keep it really clean. Your belly stretches alot in that area while pregnant. I've never heard of the hole spacers, but they might stretch the skin also. Go with something that is thin, or let it close up!

You can just take it out when you can't fit the ring in there anymore... I had mine out for 3 months and after the pregnancy it popped back in no problem!!! I've done it twice, and it worked both times with no pain......
Good luck!
