Recently, one of my computers running Windows XP Home froze and had to be restarted. However, when it finished displaying the Windows XP boot up screen (with the Windows XP logo in the center and animated blue bar near the bottom of the screen), it only proceeds to show me a black screen with a constantly blinking horizontal cursor in the upper left-hand corner. Normally at this time it would proceed to the user login screen with the logo on the left-hand side and the list of users registered on the computer on the right-hand side, but it isn’t doing that anymore. I tried to shut down/restart the computer again but the same process keeps happening and has rendered the computer unusable. I have literally left the computer on for hours, but all it does it sit at the black screen with the blinking cursor. I have checked the case of the computer and it is relatively clean of dust and dirt, and the fan appears to be operating fine.

Is there any reason why this is happening?

Hmmm... I'd say it's one of the following:

1) Bad RAM
2) Bad CPU
3) Bad motherboard
4) Check you CD drive and Floppy drive and make sure it's empty......

These are tough problems to fix as you need to change stuff to now if that was the problem... Contact a friend that has computer parts and try different combinations, changing one component at a time.

Otherwise, bring your PC to a repair shop and they'll check it out.

Good luck!

Try booting in Safe Mode.

That loads only a few drivers. If the PC boots, then go to diagnostic mode and turn off the various services, etc, to find the offender. Microsoft as a decent knowldege base on that.

Also check out labmice.net. They have great info there as well.

You very well might have a virus or Spywear on the computer as well. That can prevent it from booting. Boot in safemode again and run Spybot, CW Shredder and AdAware to remove any spywear.

If that doesn't work, try booting off the CD and run the tools.

If all else fails, you might need to re-install Windows. But that is a very, very last resort.

Shut down and start up again, While booting up hit F8 until it comes up in safe mode. Select system restore. if it comes up normally after the system restore do a virus check asap... it if won't do a system restore you'll need to take it to a professional (take it to someone MS certified) and have them take a look at it. this could be a hardware or software issue. one thing i would highly recommend is ditching Home and getting the Professional Edition. don't buy the "upgrade" just format the drive and buy the Pro Edition outright
