If you're a white person born and raised in Africa and you move to the United States and become an American citizen why don't we call you African American? On the other hand if you're a black person born and raised in America and come from umpteen hundred generations of people born in America and you've never even been to Africa why would you want to be called an African American? In other words Africa is not a race it's a place. My ancestors go back to Sweden(and not that far back) but I've never thought of or referred to myself as a Swedish American. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

White people that move here from Africa do term themselves African American sometimes.

I don't know about everyone else. But i have never been to Africa nor do I want to go there. I am American!!! But stating the obvious if you were born in Africa and come to America no matter your color then you are African American. If you were born in America then you are American no matter your color.

I guess if you were born in America and then went to Africa then you would be an American African...lol

A white person born in Africa who then immigrates to America to become a citizen is in fact African American. If you were born in America you are an American. Simple as that.

That is interesting.... I think what it boils down to is this: What do the various races prefer to be referred to as. I believe that is the reason for the specific titles out there. I think in this scenario African Americans believe that it's important to remember history and the S**T that happened. Maybe ask yourself if you had the same history as black African Americans, would you like to keep that alive as a duty to humanity so things like that never happen again. hmmm... that question jogs my mind.

The word ***** is Spanish for black. Oso ***** (or Black Bear) is a top quality gin. Black Africans don't like it because it's from whence the word ****** comes.

The word BLACK used to offend them. Then they tried AFRO-AMERICAN, which didn't pan out. Now they prefer AFRICAN American.

One wag who's spent time in black Africa says Africa is a synonym for squalor, so maybe they might like to be called SQUALOR Americans.

Good question.Well 1st of all majority of Black people, just want to be different, and have their own Idenity, as to say They created their own ethnic group vs the White Man telling them what they should be called..I do agree You don't see White people calling themselves European American's...Blacks just hate the fact that somebody is telling them what to do..rather its On the Job,@ school, Team sports etc..I personally think Black sounds alot better than African American, unless of course your from Africa.
