I have always wanted to work in travel mainly cabin crew if not travel agent, but i know this wont bring in the money, so im considering going for health and social care at college and work my way up to midwifery, mainly because its the only other option i like and i know i would get good money.

I dont know what to do?
It is either taking BTEC Travel and Tourism or BTEC health and social care at college

Midwifery all the way, sister!! I'm a midwife. I love it. It is BOTH rewarding and frustrating (like motherhood!). Depending on your location, there can be a lot of beurocracy bullsh** and sometimes it's a little thankless and tiring, but if you are passionate about helping women and families and communities then God bless you and GO FOR IT!! Just think: you will never be out of a job...why? BECAUSE PEOPLE LIKE TO HUMP. sorry to be crass, but there it is. Midwifery is the 2nd oldest profession in the world...by nine months. There is always a need for competent compassionate skilled midwives. Good luck ;o)

Hi, having worked as an air hostess I can tell you it is in no way as glamorous as it is made out to be. The training is intense and the hours are very long, its poorly paid and you have to deal with tired and grumpy passengers at 2am in the morning! :-)

Having said that you do get to travel but most airlines rota you with a different crew each time so if its a big airline you fly with different colleagues every time, its like starting a new job every flight so you are always on your best behaviour. There is no down time on a short haul flight (and that can be up to 6 hours each way) so you have to be prepared to be on the go and on your feet for long stretches as there is no where to hide in the cabin.

Can you bear the thought of flying to Ibiza on a Saturday night with a plane full of 18 year olds, whilst your mates go out for a birthday party or special occasion?

The positive of this job is that it will make your CV stand out from the crowd, it puts you in good stead to deal with most situations and perform many different kinds of jobs in the future. It will make you feel independant and build your confidence no end. Also if you get to fly long haul you will get to see some amazing places too.

Anyway I hope this has helped and that I haven't sounded too negative, I always think it is good to have an opinion of someone with experience.

Good luck whichever way you decide to go, I hope it all goes well for you.

i did leisure/travel and tourism at college and had a great time! like you i wanted to be cabin crew, I'd got the application forms but met a guy who i liked so put the job on hold. That was 8 Years ago, i married him and had 2 children and never actually got to do the travel thing! - i say go with your heart and do what you want whether it pays good money or not. good luck

I find it amazing how many people associate being a member of the cabin crew as being effeminate. I have seen many men as cabin attendant whom I felt no need to question their orientation. This is just sexist bigotry. I fly plenty and would be proud to be a cabin crew member. Old Doc

I think that midwifery would be so much more rewarding and long term. The money in cabin crew is not that great and after a certain age they put you on the ground. Yes travelling the world would a great experience but what happens after is all??

Midwife.
Less stress. Better pay. Better hours. More respect. More rewarding. Easier to have a family/social life.

The BTEC in travel and tourism will be completely worthless when you apply to be Cabin Crew, so don't bother. You can apply as soon as you're 18, so just apply straight to the airlines.

depends what you want more being cabin crew will help you see more of the world but at the same time it may get a bit repetitive but being a midwife will feel more rewarding and you will be bringing life into the world on a daily bases so will feel more rewarding. either way they both involve long unsociable hours. Good luck in whatever you choose

You should choose the path that makes you happy. Think about what you get excited about. What are you passionate about. This point in your life is not where you worry about the amount money. So many people choose a career path based on the salary and 20 years later wake up and realize they hate their lives. It is a fact, proven time and again that if you are passionate about what you are doing and wake up every day anxious to get to work the money will come to you.
Good luck on your choice. Just remember it your choice.

If you are smart, honest, hardworking and well mannered. You can make a fortune working in the professional yachting crew business. There are many good schools in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. You have to be able to keep a secret (not gossip). You also have to be loyal. Eventually you will be noticed and the money will come.

If I were you I'd do the travel thing. I'm a nurse by trade and have had enough so I'm off to travel the world. It's a lot of hard work and training for very little pay and STRESS!!! Trust me it ain't nothing like 'Holby City'- if it were I may consider staying!
