What purpose dose a blacksmith have now days?
I wish to continue my blacksmithing but there is so little need for blacksmiths. The only reason I do it is to preserve my heritage and maintain the secrecy of our family steel forgeing techniques(i.e swordsmithing.) I feel as if me being a blacksmith is losing its purpose. is there anyone out there that can help me refine my skills

I am a full-time Blacksmith in Illinois I make a variety of different thing from Weaponry to candle sticks. I make a very good living off of it. There are many people out there that would pay more money for items that are hand forged compared to cheaply assembled and manufactured. Recently I finished a fence project for a house in an upscale neighborhood that I made $4000 off of and it took me approx. 2 weeks 10 hours a day to make. Blacksmithing can be a magnificent endeavor. If you have the patience to learn the skill to the highest expertise. Good luck

Keep on smithin'! You can stay in practice working wrought iron, this still has many uses...I like it that there are still people interested in sword forging, it's becoming a lost art, unless young people like you keep it alive.
