In the business we refer to it as a "slate" or "marker", because it is made of a chalkboard where we write the scene number, the take number, the cameraman's name and the director's name. This is put in front of the camera and flmed for about 3 seconds so when the editor gets all the processed film from the lab, he can just look at the slate marks and see what scene is on the film, rather than looking at all the film from the whole scene. If we forget to film the slate at the beginning of the scene, we will turn the slate upside down and film it at the end of the scene. This is called a "tail slate". The "clapper" on the top of the slate is used to sync up the audio recorder with the camera. In the new digital age, we are now using digital slates, of course, with electronic flashes of light that emit the "time code" for videotape and digital recording. It is usually the 1st Assistant Director who yells out "quiet, roll camera, speed, marker, and action" for the Director who is watching a monitor with a headset on nearby.
