I like Yahoo games chess. It's free and there are a bunch of people who use it 24 hours a day.

Try Postcard Chess. It's an email based chess game between you and another person, where you are notified by email when your opponent has made his move, and all you have to do is click the link in the email to have it take you to the game board to make your move.
