No most car rental places require a major credit card because that's the only way they can hold the car when you reserve it. If you rent the car for someone else you're the one who's responsible if you're putting up the credit card and paying for how much time you plan to have the car. They ask for a credit card for verification because so many people are prone to using false names and paying in cash which makes them suspicious for many car rental places since drug runners and criminals rent cars to keep from being detected by law enforcement while they're committing crimes.

Credit card usage is down because of a failing ecomony therefore, companies that did not honor debit cards are glad to accept them.. Join your rental car agency club.. Some of them will even let you prepay for your rental like Alamo with a debit card. In the current economy, it is all about a Dollar.. There are plenty of rent-a-car agencies that will honor your request. Go get yourself a separate Debit card for needed funds as in the travel industry there is an "Authorization" hold for your funds that could last up to 7 days from the date the car is returned.. Find out what the rental car is going to hold on your regular debit card, put that amount on your card plus an additional $25.00 and then put the rest of your needed funds on a prepaid debit card.. That way, your needed funds don't get locked into an authorization hold.. Western Union has a neat prepaid visa card.

If you have a debit check card they will rent to you, BUT they also take a deposit off the card which is returned 3-7 business days later.
