first separate the "unknown" term by subtracting 43 and adding 19 to each side:
98a = 167 - 43 + 19 simplify to get
98a = 143 divide both sides by 98 to get
a = 143/98 simplify to get
a = 1.459183673......... a non repeating decimal carried out as many places as required

98a+43=167+19 (add 19 to both sides)
98a= 167 + 19 - 43 (subtract 43 from both sides)
a = (167 + 19 - 43) / 98 (divide 98 from both sides)

a = 1.4591836734693877551020408163265
i.e. a = 1.459

p.s. Mary, dont ban me! :-P Im just trying to help the kid, must be desperate to ask this in Yahoo Answers! hehe
