This is like asking "how long should I stare at the puppy, before I make him my pet?"...
Some you fall in love with instantaneously, some follow you home, some you give away as gifts and the others you do not even look at. Of course, and not everyone likes puppies!!!

Engagement is a more polite term for "prolonging marriage". But it could also be positive, and help you understand the other person before the deed is done.
Your love for each other, commitment, support for each other (personally and professionally), your ego, your weaknesses, your strengths, your likes and dislikes etc etc can all be read during this time.
If you feel that you are lacking, then improve. If you feel he/she is lacking, communicate. If no resolution is possible, then it saves you the time and money for a marriage and a divorce!!!
Enjoy and learn! You will know when the time comes to finalize the deal!!!
Good luck!

A few months, for me. After 3-4 months, I can usually tell where the relationship is headed.

At least 2 years. Marriage is forever, so you should take your time getting to know the person that you're going to be with forever.

If you are in your early 20's or younger, at least two years. After that, one year should be fine.
