I have found that to be true. I'm 51; when I was a kid, a year seemed like an INTERMINABLE amount of time. Now, a year goes by before I know it. I read a theory about this long ago; the basic idea is that the older you get, the smaller percentage of your life a given time represents. For example, at 51, a year is only about 2 percent of my life, but when I was 5, a year was 20 percent; the larger the percentage of your life, then longer it seems according to the theory. Of course, as adults, we also have a better concept of how long a given period of time really is to us, but I think the theory has some merit.

This may relate directly to Einstein's Theoroy of Relativity. Basically, it says that the faster you go, the slower time seems to go and vice versa.

When we are children, our metabolisms are going a mile a minute. As we age, metabolism slows, making time seem to speed up.

Remember as a little kid when you were on a trip with your parents and the inevitable question was "Are we there yet?" It seemed like the trip went on forever. Five minutes seemed like an hour!

Now, we hear older people say "How time flies?" "Seems like only yesterday!"

Of course, this is only partially because of metabolism. It has to do, as others have said, with being busy and time flying that way.. When we are totally focussed on a project, the time melts away.

Einstein said it like this. An hour with your lover seems like only a minute. A second sitting on a hot stove seems like an hour! Relative to our experience is the way that time goes.

What do you think?

Yes.
The reason is because of 'comparison'.
If you were 20 years old and one year went by, that would be 5% of your life.
If you were 40 years old and one year went by, that's only 2.5% of your life.
The older you get, the more time you've already been through. Each day or year that you live seems that much less time, as a %, than the day before.

Every day is a continuous thing you get use of every thing and then things pass by faster and faster. You have the seasons, phases in life and the hourglass seems to be running out. Today's world is about speeding up the process in every thing and then we just forget to stop and think about our own lives.

Yep, and I have a theory: perception and expectation.

Say you are standing in line at the DMV to get your driver's license. You spend two hour there and leave aggravated because "It took FOREVER."

Now say you send off an order to a mail-order catalog on Monday and you receive the order in the mail -- without paying extra for overnight delivery -- on Wednesday. You're thrilled because "That didn't take long at all!"

At the DMV you were only there for 2 hours but it seemed like forever. Conversely, the order took 2 DAYS but it seemed like no time at all.

It's all in the angle.

I am pretty sure it is a placebo thing. As we grow older, we want time to go by slower, but contrary it goes by faster. Vice versa with young people.

Yes, because as you get older a day is a smaller portion of your life.

Yep-sure does-maybe it's like driving the same way every day.But when you go a new way it seems to take longer. I guess you just do the same things so much time just flys by.
