If you are really sure you want to have a tropical community. I think some good fish are guppies, platies, green hi fin molly, green swordtail, cardinal tetra, red brick swordtail. The site is http://badmanstropicalfish.com/
Theres a lot of tropical fish in that site. If you change your mind I also recommend you to get a marine community cause the fish are really colorful.

30 gal great I love this size not too big not too small. Personally I like lots of fish in my tanks so I usually go with small fish but I have friends who like big fish and only put one big fish per tank. I like the tetra family, danios, and cory cats- there are just so many to choose from. I like the aquatic livestock section of www.thatpetplace.com and www.liveaquaria.com both of these sites will give you pics of fish and a little about them and their living conditions. be sure not to over crowd the fish too little fish is better than too many fish (making all the fish get sick)

Start off with some mollys. It will help to build the algae in the tank. You won't need a pecostimis for a few months.
Depending on your style. I personally like cichlids, convects, rams, they are very colorful, and they change colors to their moods. But they are extremely aggressive fish, and it's hard to add new fish to a tank where one of these have already made their home.
If you like schooling fish. Guppys are very repoductive, as mollys, Neons are cool, but they die quickly.
I've never liked Goldfish, they are hearty, but they need atleast 1 other 'friend' to keep them company.

Walmart has always been a good place to start for beginneers.
They can give you the names of fish that will get along in your tank and amount.

I love groups of schooling fish like Harlequin Rasboras. Kuhli Loaches are also really fun to watch. Amano shrimp are not fish but they'll help keep algae at bay for you, and it's fun to watch them party when you first introduce them to the tank!
