The free agent market is not going to help the Giants much offensively. They are going to have to get creative via trading. They have a decent farm system again and a ton of money to sign players to long term contracts after completing trades. The two players they should target in trades are Miguel Cabrera and Aaron Rowand. Cabrera slides into the LF slot (or 3B) and Rowand plays a solid CF. They seem committed to Kevin Frandsen at 2B, and might make a play for Rich Aurilia to play 1B (or 3B). Randy Winn and Omar Vizquel round out the starters. If they resign any of their position players it will be Pedro Feliz or Shea Hillenbrand.
Between Bonds and Schmidt, they might be more inclined to sign Schmidt, since finding a top of the rotation starter is far more difficult thana 30 HR outfielder. I've also heard rumors of Ted Lilly and Jeff Suppan, but the Giants already have a bunch of #3-#5 starters and don't need 2 more. Flush with cash they should make a play for Barry Zito and either Lilly or Suppan. Rotation is now Zito, Lowry, Cain, Morris and Lilly/Suppan.
Bonds is Bonds, the Giants would do well to make a token offer and then say goodbye and let him play the market. When no one signs him, then they can make another, lower offer if they need to.

Yes they will; The Giants need to figure out the Bonds fiasco though before they move on. The free agent market isn't really great this year;
Peter McGowan is a closet thief as far as I'm concerned. It's been reported that PACBELL park will be paid off 15 years early. McGowan will take near a billion dollars when he sells. They worry about the payroll when they're making tons of money.
The Giants are also in a very poor division. Juan Pierre is a very overrated player and an avg. outfielder so I dont' think that was a big miss; Dave Roberts now wants to go to SF but he's only a borderline starter. I think Bonds comes back now because the pickens are slim and the Giants don't want to spend the money.

Schmidt is not coming back. Pierre and Mathews Jr. aren't worth the money the Dodgers and Angels paid them. Bonds will probably come back, everybody hates him everywhere else. I can see Bonds, Dave Roberts, and Randy Winn in the outfield next year, which isn't that great. What the Giants really need is a real power hitter. Someone who hits 35-45 homers a year and drives in 110+ RBI's a year.

As a giants fan I would love to say but odds are they are not going to do anything amazing. The best player they are talking to right now is Gary Matthews Junior. He's a great centerfielder, somewhat young, and he can swing the bat. Re-signing Bonds is a long-shot but not impossible. As for pitching Schmidt is definately gone, I don't see any way he comes back. Expect some minor moves but nothing amazing

I don't see them doing anything, they don't want to spend a penny!
Has a life long fan, it is starting to piss me off. If they don't sign Bonds, I can't see myself going to any games next year!!

The best move that they can make is to not re-sign Barry Bonds and let him retire.
