I've been playing for a year now. I recommend that you start by learning how to read tab(lature). This will allow you to learn simple tunes you know from the internet. It's slow at first but after a few months i would recommend starting lessons with a proper paid teacher. However for the first few months i would recommend www.ulitmate-guitar.com for tablature, written lessons and a few video lessons under the column section. Also i highly recommend Guitar for Dummies which is both informative and fun for beginners

I've been playing for six years and I taught myself. Mostly by ear though...its kinda hard. Other than that I got tab books from music stores and watched concert dvds and listened to cds...whatever I could get my hands on. No matter what though it takes a while to learn. I didn't want to just play chords either,so I learned my own way. Whatever style you're trying to learn, I say get whatever material you can get on it. like cds, dvds, tab books, or online tab sites. I never tried lessons myself but it might not be a bad idea. good luck

My guy friend learnt on his own using tabs I got him off the internet! He says that's easier, but now someone teaches him as well. Try the tabs first and see what you think! You can get mostly any song for free!
