We have a dimmer switch on our front room lights that has stopped dimming when turned. Anybody any idea what the problem is? Does the entire switch need to be replaced? Is it something that we could replace ourselves?

Dimmers will fail eventually, simple diy job to replace, only two wires, just copy whats there. TURN THE POWER OFF FIRST!!

Despite the answer above, you are allowed to do this job, it is NOT under Part P. A simple repair.

The Carbon track on the Dimmer rotary switch has 'burnt out', and can not be easily repaired, this is like the good old days when your volume control on thr radio or tv became crackly, It used to be repaired with a Graphite Pencil to replace the track with new graphite powder, However it is not cost effective to do this so just replace it, but always make sure that the switch you replace it with is of the correct rating (In Amps) to take the load connected to it.

Remember the load may be in Watts eg. 300Watts (3 x 100W light bulbs) therefore as rule of thumb, 300(Watts) divided by 250 (Volts) = 1.2(Amps or Amperes)

I hope this Helps

Yes just replace the dimmer. It's an easy do it yourself project that would take about 10 minutes.

You'd need to have the dimmer replaced, in the long run it would be cheaper cause lets face it, when it comes to electrics, unless trained, you should never try to repair a fault yourself.

yah it sounds like you need to replace the dimmer switch and yes - its easy enough for you to do at home but please please be careful and make sure you turn that circuit off so there no chance of anyone hurting themselves. barring that fork over the $60 for a licensed contractor to come and do it for you.

you cannot fix a dimmer switch........inside the switch, itself, it is more than likely a sealed unit......... and this one sounds like it is totally u/s.
but dimmer switches are relatively cheap and easy to fit.
