What most people don't know about Voltaire is that he never said what he's most famous for saying. The quote "I disapprove of what you say but I will defend your right to say" doesn't appear in Voltaire's writings. It comes from the book "Friends of Voltaire" which was published in 1906 biography. The author Evelyn Beatrice Hall used the phrase while describing Voltaire's willingness to take up for a writer he disagreed with.

Most people heard about him, didn't they ?
A funny thing about him is that he had a house just at the frontier between France and Switzerland. When he had problems with the French because of his books he went to the Swiss side of the house and couldn't be arrested and when he had problems with Swiss people he went to the French side.
