Well people have been smoking it for ever and it is not a big deal. My parents would have sh1t themselves if they knew I had tried it because they had no experience with it. When my daughter smoked it, it was no big deal because I knew what she was getting into.

People who use it and those that want to use it are hoping that it is more and more acceptable. However, society makes its wishes known by the laws it passes and repeals. Today, more than ever, there is mandatory drug testing done by employers for all new hires. If MJ shows up, the person doesn't get hired and the government supports and even encourages those actions. Even in the few states where possession of a small amount is a ticket offense, the user is still not accepted by employers.
Because I held a top-secret security clearance in the Navy 40 years ago, I had to attend semi-annual drug education seminars. The instructor was a straight-shooter. Even then he said flat-out that alcohol abuse was far worse for us than smoking MJ, but alcohol was legal. If we were caught with any amount of MJ, we would lose our clearance and receive a dishonorable discharge. We haven't come any further from that point to where we are today.

Honestly, I think the critics are backing off a little because statistics show that alcohol is far worse than marijuana in terms of fatalities. Even on the commercials, they used to have the one where the kids are smoking marijuana in the fast food drive thru, then pull off real fast and hit a little girl on a bike. That's just not realistic. Now they show commercials about nothing happening when you smoke marijuana, except sitting on the couch. There was really no evidence that it was a deadly drug.

More acceptable. I know many who do it and who advocate its use as less harmful than alcohol or other drugs. I hear the arguments and its hard to come up with anything that will stick to change those points. It will never be legal but it certainly is more acceptable.
