I have a very loving, playful 1 1/2 year old hairless rat. He has skin cancer and presents with 3 large red sores on his body. He is currently doing very well, is active, curious and still enjoying life. He lives in a large cage with lots of toys, I changed his litter from pine shavings to shredded newspaper to keep pine wood oils from bothering his skin and I have already changed his food to "Reggie Rat" for more balanced nutrition.

I want to know what kind of care I should give him to increase his comfort and longevity. Should I apply an antibiotic ointment to the sores on a regular basis? Are there other things I can do?

(Serious, helpful answers only please.)

Is the only thing you feed him rat food? They need more nutrients like we do. Try apples, carrots to clear up the skin a bit. And it's good for the rat.

Also, get it checked out by the Vet. if you haven't already.

I think you should ask your vet, I think an aitnibiotic ointment would be fine, but not sure if some of its components would be more harmful instead of healing.. Did a vet determined it's cancer condition? Same vet should help you then...
