There have been no studies on how safe it is to take metformin throughout your pregnancy, so many docs will want you to stop it after you first trimester. A few enlightened ones will let you stay on it.
For your first trimester, it is extremely important to stay on it. People with PCOS very frequently have miscarriages. Staying on the Met cuts that risk dramatically.
It has been shown that women who stay on the drug throughout pregnancy have a much less chance of developing gestational diabetes.
For my first, I was convinced I had PCOS but could not get a doc to diagnose me as such. I developed Gestational diabetes and had to take insulin shots. After I gave birth, I was still diabetic and have been ever since.

You will go off of it once you are prego, assuming that you are on it to GET pregnant? I was on it while TTC but it would not induce a period for me. You might want to check your blood sugars as well. If your body is producing too much insulin, your blood sugar will already be low so Metformin can decrease it even lower.
