It's funny you ask, because I was literally just playing it a few seconds ago.
The point of the game is to clear the entire field (all the boxes) by opening up the "safe" squares and leaving the squares with mines. At the little box to the left of the smiley, the number of bombs left on your field is displayed. To the right of the smiley is a stopwatch, and the smiley itself restarts your game when you click on it.
So how do you know which squares are mines are which aren't?
The entire field is kind of like a puzzle. Squares can be one if either three things-- a mine, a number, or nothing at all (in which case you open up a little plot of nothingness bordered by numbers). The number will tell you exactly how many mines there are in the eight boxes surrounding it, and using those numbers as clues, you can right click spots where you decide bombs are located. At first, this will seem like the most ridiculous logic problem in the world, but the trick is to get a good start. I recommend the cheap way-- click all over the place randomly until you click on a blank square that opens up a huge, oddly shaped plot. You'll get a gameover like. 5 times in a row, but it's worth that one time of winning.
Then, look for numbers that don't have many squares surrounding them. Many times, there's a 1 with only one box adjacent to it. Since the 1 says there's 1 box around the number, and since there's only 1 box that's unknown, you know that that box must be a bomb. Flag it with a right click. Then, use that flag to help you. maybe that flag is also within the eight squares surrounding another 1. Then, since that one square is a bomb and the number can only have 1 bomb surrounding it, you can safely click the other boxes around the number. And from there, you keep going.
It's a lot of fun after a little bit of practice. obviously, start at beginner first, then move your way up to intermediate and expert.
have fun!

The numbers you see when you click a square are how many mines are in the ajacent squares either above, below, or on the corners. To get started learning easily. Go to the custom setup. Use a 24 high 30 wide and 40 mines. If you don't set on a mine right off the bat you should be able to clear it every time. Once you get the hang of it the game becomes a matter of how fast you can clear the field, not can you clear the field.
E-mail me if you have any other questions. I'll be back Monday.

When you click on a square it reveals a number. The indicates the number of mines that are touching that square. You then try and figure out which squares contain mines and which do not. For instance if you have a square that is touching only one other square and has a 1 in it, you know the square it is touching is a mine. You right click on mine squares to mark them. Minesweeper is a really interesting game when you get into it. It requires a lot of thought.

To start, you just have to click until you get a group of blocks to open. The numbers tell you how many bombs that block is touching. If it's a "1" and it's only touching one block, then that block has a bomb. You can right click it to mark it with a flag so you know there's a bomb there. If next to that "1" there's another "1" but that block is touching more than one block, including the flagged block, then you can click the other blocks because you know there aren't any bombs there. It's a process of elimination. Hope this explanation helped and wasn't too confusing.
Good luck!!

when u click .. and numbers appear .. that tells you how many bombs are there among the 8 blocks around u .. you will have to figure out which is the bomb. you can mark it with a right click ( the little flag ) the ones u think is / are the bomb(s).
when u open up more hints .. it is easier to figure out which are bombs .. as you might get overlapping info ..
e.g .. you get the numbers .. 1 and 3 in the 3x3 blocks .. and theres 3 blocks unrevealed, tadaaa .. those three ARE the bombs ! =D
its fun . i used to play it for hours =S
