It depends on what you're using the computer for. For most people who just want to browse the internet quickly, 512mb should be plenty. You could go with 256mb too but it would be slower. And if you're a gamer, you could go up to about 4096mb (4Gb) but it's extremely expensive and overkill.

not bad but if u have more it will be better for sure but it's depend on the programs you use some of them needs high quota of RAMs "big RAM as u call it" & the others doesn't.
for example the graphics programs & the animation programs needs high RAMs.

another point, i think also it's important to have a processor with high cash & hight proccessing speed cause the data will go from RAM to the proccessor to doing proccess if it cant proccess the ammount that recieved from RAM, the computer will hanging a little.

How much money do you have? Your computer needs often change through time and what was once adequate won't do anymore and you will need to purchase additional RAM. That said you can get by with a little if you are an a tight budget and get more later when you need it.

Don't buy a new computer with less than 1GB of RAM minimum.

If you are doing a lot of processor intensive or video intensive work, consider getting as much as you can afford.
