i would say it is more uncomfortable than painful,i was a little nervous watching the needle going in(as i saw it on a scan machine as tey were performing it),they froze the image, and i thought what if the baby moves and gets pricked, but doctors know what they're doing, and it all went well, there is a chance of miscarriage, but as long as you rest when you get home, you'll be fine.i now have a perfect, healthy 11yr old, daughter, after many people advised me not to have it done.good luck,

I just had my amnio last week, and am waiting for the results which take 2 weeks. It does hurt a tiny bit, but the whole thing is over in less than a minute. Its just like getting a shot. I kept my eyes closed and it went quick. Afterward, I had slight pain and slight cramping (no bleeding) for a couple of days. I rested in bed with my feet up as much as possible for a couple of days to make sure I healed OK. I feel fine now.
The risks from amnio are fetal death from infection from the needle (this is the biggest risk), premature delivery, and leaking amniotic fluid that doesn't stop. The risks are about 1 in 250 to 1 in 500 that you will lose the baby, so this is considerably less than 1 percent risk.
But a lot depends on the skill of the practitioner doing the test. The OB who does the amnio should have done at least 500 or so in his career, and should do them at least once per week. If not, ask for a referral to someone with more experience. My doctor does one a week for the past 20 years and said he has only caused three miscarriages. So ask your doctor how many miscarriages he/she has caused.
Also, make sure they use continuous ultrasound to guide the needle placement. You should only do the amnio if your risk of having a baby with a chromosomal defect is higher than the risk of the amnio. My risk was one in 75 for a defect, so I opted for the test.
good luck

I had one for my daughter as the triple test came back dodgy.
It didn't hurt, it's just not a particularly pleasant experience. It feels weird when the needle goes through the uterus, it's hard to describe, but it wasn't painful. I definitely felt the were going through a layer.
If they do it with a scan at the same time, they can seewhere they're going. They'll try to do it away from the baby. Mine was packed at one end, so they had lots of room, but my friend's baby did a hand movement as if to try and grab the needle. It scared the practitioner shitless so she decided to do another one a few days later...
It's a lot of worry and I felt wobbly until I got the results (I had to pay £80 to get them back after a week, or nothing after 2 weeks...they try to make dosh everywhere!).
The good thing about it is that you get to be sure your gem doesn't have anything and if you want to know the sex and they have not cooperated at the scans before, you'll have a definite answer.
After the actual thing, you're a bit uncomfortable for a few days. No push ups for you for a while :)
Risks are about 1% -well, they were in Autumn 2003.
Good luck.

I had an amnio whilst carrying my first daughter as my downs test came through as 1 in 67 chances of her having downs syndrome. NO, it does not hurt at all, it just all very scary, which goes without saying. The chances of miscarriage are 1%.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do. x

I had chorionic villi sampling (CVS) which is very similar. It certainly didn't hurt but there were a couple of moments when I thought it was about to.
