I have work at many different types of restaurants since I was 16 and have had numerous positions and have formed my own opinion, but was wondering what the general publics' opinion was to this question. Yes, they all should work as a collective whole to ensure a profitable business, but my opinion is that the lowest demeaning job of the dishwashers job out ways many others.

Well I think the servers are the most important because they are directly interacting with the public and can make or break a long lasting relationship. It is all about customer service.

By far the most important position is the cook/chef. This person is in charge or a varying degree of demands on a daily basis depending on the size of the operation. From staffing, cooking and food prep he/she may be the one in charge of profitability and maintaining a positive food presentation and taste. Its true nobody eats at an empty restaurant and generally empty restaurants have mediocre cooks/chefs. In order to stay in business the food must be delicious and consistent which makes the cook the most important.

I think that the waiter/waitress is the most important because why would anyone want to hire someone who is sarcastic and rude to customers? Back in the gold old days, they would hire anyone, but I am assuming that they lost a lot of customers if the waiter/waitress was yelling at the customers because of personal problems. You have to be a people person for this type of job.

The Manager. In order for the whole restaurant to run smoothly....someone has to be in charge and know what is needed to make things happen. Been there, done that! And no...being a manager is NOT easy! They may not have to get their hands dirty(some do), but there is more stress and headaches with being the manager. And usually longer hours. And in some cases....managers have been known to actually make less than the other people.
