Tachycardia (more than 100 beats per minute [bpm]) can be an indicator of heart disease.

Temporary increases in heart rates in generally healthy people are not considered harmful to the human body.

A constantly fast heart rate can eventually lead to heart failure, in which the wall of the left ventricle thickens and the heart draws in insufficient blood before pumping out again. The insufficient intake results from the heart's not having expelled the maximum amount since the last heartbeat. Thus blood builds up in the heart between strokes. Occasional fast heart rate because of vigorous exercise is harmless.

We did an exercise in class once where we took our average heartrate and figured out how many times it would beat in your lifetime vs. how many times it would beat if it were ten beats less per minute, and it was a really high number, like a billion or something like that, so lowering you heartrate does reduces strain on your heart.

Having it over a certain heart rate can be dangerous. It depends on age and what your doing for how long.

if it is at a high rate for a long period of time then it means that your body isn't getting enough blood everywhere, and it will eventually get worn out and stop. that's why cardio activity is good, it strengthens your heart.
