The tigers scored 16 more points in the second half than in the first half. They scored 86 points in all. How many points did they score in each half?
(yeah it sounds like a elementary school question, but for some reason i got really close to the answer but didn't get it.)

Let x be the score on the first half of the game.

Score on the 1st. half = x
Score on the 2nd. half = x +16
Total score (1st. half + 2nd. half) = 86

So, x + (x + 16) = 86
2x + 16 = 86
2x + 16 - 16 = 86 - 16 (subtract 16, from both sides)
2x = 70
2x / 2 = 70 / 2 (divide both sides by 2)
x = 35

So,
Score on the first half (x) = 35
Score on the second half (x + 16) = (35 + 16) = 51

PROOF:
x + (x + 16) = 86
35 + (35 + 16) = 86
35 + 51 = 86
86 = 86

If you want to do it with the help of arithmatic,subtract 16 from 86 and then divide the result by 2 to get the score of the first half
86-16=70
Therefore,they scored 70/2 or 35 in the first half,and
they sored 35+16 or 51 in the second half.

algebrically ,you have to do it in the following way
Let them sore x points in the first hlf
therefore,they scored x+16 points in the second half.
By the problem
x+x+16=86 By solving the eqn we get x=35Therefore,they scored 35 it the first half nd 3516=51 in the second hlf

well bear has done it so i don have to repeat...anyway whts so confusing about the qn?

its simple first degree eqn in single varible.

Just get more qns of the same type from some practice books and learn to break them down into variable and equations. Youll be ok in no time.
