When I visited London, UK last summer, I did not find people on the road wearing their traditional English attire. No suit, no tie, no felt hat. They weren't holding stick in their hands and the atmosphere was very informal. When I asked my British friend what had happened to the age old englishman he said We in't British anymore... We are all Americans now!!

The point is whether people all over the world are becoming more informal or whether American people are influencing others around them all over the world?

Lucky you!
I had to realise that in Germany the boys just did not wear Lederhosen, when I asked a guy in Berlin, he insisted that the Lederhosen would only been worn in a small part of Germany called Bavaria and only for some festivities.
He really got upset, when I told him that 50 years ago all Germans were wearing Lederhosen all day long and that you can see it in all movies about Germany from that time.
I tell you those Europeans are crazy and next time when I want to see the REAL Europe I will go to Florida, to the Epcos center.

Answer to your addition:
I think fashion itself is more and more global, the leading fashion centers are Paris, Milano, Rome, Tokyo, New York and London.
There will be fashion trends that are initiated in any of the countries, sometimes in other places that make it around the world. From your view it lookes like Europeans dress American, from a European view it looks like Americans dress European. Your initial description sounds like a European is travelling to New York or Chicago and expecting everyone to be dressed like a cowboy or like Al Capone.
Just look at the Brand Names you see all around: Chanel - french / Hugo Boss - German / Armani - Italian / Kenzo - Japan / Billabong - Australian / Stüssy - Austria / Tommy Hilfinger - US and so on ...

It's global, not american.

People haven't dressed that way since the 19th century, I'd assume. Europe is a very progessive place. Traditional English attire went out probably hundreds of years ago. His comment about westernization has some truth to it but even without that, Europe has always been progressing, including their clothing style.

What's your point? You really thought people in Europe were still dressing like they did a long time ago? You don't get out much.

Its not US influencing everyone, its just the culture of the whole world today that has changed.
