A Smoot is a unit of measure equal to five feet seven inches.

In 1958, Oliver Smoot was used as a measuring unit in a fraternity prank at MIT. He was repeatedly laid end-to-end to measure the Cambridge Bridge over the Charles River. The bridge length is 364.4 Smoots -- plus one ear.

MIT students still re-mark the bridge every year -- marking the ten Smoot marks. Cambridge and Boston police actually use the Smoot marks every year.

Ironically, Oliver Smoot later became head of the ISO -- the International Standards Organization.
