I'm travelling to NRT and arriving late in the afternoon (sunday 3:30pm) and from there planning on going to Osaka (hyatt hotel), but I have no idea how to get there via train. I tried checking JR site and I can see there is Tokaido Shinkansen (anything but nozomi train?!), but it appears all are running from downtown Tokyo. Any way to catch the train (or bus - as long as i can be in Osaka by 10pm) from NRT airport?
thank you ,,,

I don't think it would be possible to get out of the airport in time to be able to catch the shinkansen to Osaka area. I am in Japan right now for vacation, and landed around 3:30, the plane taxiing to the terminal took about an hour, doing immigration, standing in lines, finding your way around and all, I think it would be very difficult to get out of the airport in less than 2-3 hours.
Add to that the time to get into Tokyo proper (narita is about an hour away) if you take train, bus, sky taxi or whatever, it still will take about an hour, you need to get to Tokyo Station.
Shinkansen will take about 3-3 1/2 hours to get to Osaka I've been told.
When I arrived last week, I was so tired from the plane flight that I got a hotel near the airport, it was quite expensive as well, 94000 yen for the room, and the 'complimentary breakfast' set me back 16000 yen, If I had to do it over again, I would make a reservation in a tokyo hotel near tokyo or ueno stations and then in the morning head to either to reserve a seat on shinkansen
Did you pre-reserve a jr rail pass? If so, just make sure you aren't taking a nozomi train, since those aren't covered.
I rode shinkansen back from Shizuoka a few days ago, seats are like an airplane, the porter comes by occassionally to sell food/drink, it took about 50 minutes to complete what took 3 hours by car. by my gps, the train reached up to 190kmph, but there are faster trains that can reach close to 300kmph

Yea, you should fly directly to Kansai International airport. It is in Osaka gulf.
From Narita, you move to Tokyo station first, by Narita Express train or Limousine buss.
3,000 yen.
Then take Shinkansen, bullet train.
From Tokyo station, schedules on Sunday in below.
The car name is "Nozomi" and all car go to Osaka.
17: 50
18: 03 13 20 26 33 46 50 53
19: 13 26 33 46 50
You need to buy a ticket to, and get off at ,"Shin Osaka" station.
Free seat 13,240 yen, reserved seat 14,050 yen, first class (called "Green car") 18,690yen.
It takes about 2 hour 40 min.
Are you staying the Hyatt Regency Osaka?

Then move to Osaka station. From "Shin Osaka station" to "Osaka staion" is just 1 mile.
There is a building named "Gare Osaka"ギャレ大阪 at Osaka station.

From the building, at orange circle, you can take Hyatt bus (30 min ride).
20:00
20:30
21:00
22:00 last bus
Keep the number of the hotel
Hyatt Regency Osaka
phone:06-6612-1234
If you can change the flight, you better fly to Kansai International Airport directly. There is a direct bus, not Hyatt bus though, from the airport as well.
Staying in Tokyo is not that cheap.

Sounds like you should fly directly to Kansai International (Osaka) airport. Or maybe you can catch a flight from Haneda to Osaka. The Nozomi Shinkansen is the fastest train to Osaka. There are other shinkansens, but they take a little more time. Basically your trip would be like this
Narita Express -> Tokyo -> Shin Osaka.
Narita Airport -> Haneda (Bus) fly to Kansai International Airport -> train to Osaka.
Since your flight arrives at 1530, it might be about 1700 when you pass customs and immigration.
