What supports the weight of the gable roof facia is the gable wall, on which the cross members of the gable ladder sits. The other end of the cross members are attached to the first roof rafters adjacent to the gable wall. In other words, it's a simple lever system, where the gable wall acts as the fulcrum. The cross members of the gable ladder is frequently called "let-ins", because notches are conventionally made in the gable wall framing to allow the cross members pass through between the first roof rafters and the gable roof facia.

A gable ladder supports itself as it is built like a ladder hence the name when you then put the roofing battens on this helps to support then locking the slates or roof tiles together then the soffit boards finally supports the ladder sounds silly but it has worked for many year hope this answers your question good luck.
