First thing is to empower the employee. Do not micromanage them. Give them the task to do and let them determine how to do it. Express confidence in their ability to do the job and offer any assistance they need. As a manager/supervisor your job is to direct and remove roadblocks. You want to give the employ the opportunity to take ownership of the job.
Once they have completed the job compliment the work done. If appropriate, offer suggestion on what might have made it better or easier to do. Always approach things with a positive, can-do frame of mind and express your confidence in the employee's ability to do the job on their own. Make them feel good about what they are doing and how they do it.

Good employee, making sales, returns customers, give that employee a raise in the paycheck! Maybe a bonus.

Praise the things they do well; offer CONSTRUCTIVE criticism when things don't quite go as planned. If the employee is ready for more responsibility, offer him/her the opportunity. Always remember, YOU can't be promoted until you have trained a successor.
