A library in 1916 would have used only a card catologue for keeping track of books. If you wanted to find a book there was no computer to use. Everything was manually done on paper, or in the librarian's brain. The card catalogue had basically a little card with the information for each book in the library, organized alphabetically. So you had to look through thousands of cards. There was also no on-line reference material, and no electronic media sources like videos, dvds, etc. Just books.
