wifi hotspots are usually set to assign IP addresses automatically (assigned by DHCP)...so when u try to connect to a wifi hotspot make sure that u have not manually set an IP address to ur wifi card...when u go to the hotspot u will see available connections..choose ur required connection and it will automatically connect u to the service...

almost that simple. if anything, you should know that starbucks internet use is not free, and many hot spots are for subscribers only. But I'll tell you how it is at my restaurant where I have free Wi-Fi
what you do is:
enter the place
turn your PC on.
right click on the little icon of the PC monitor and waves on your lower right corner, by the clockon your screen.
click on "view available wireless networks"
select the one you want to connect to.
if it says "unsecured" that means you don't need a password, so click on "Connect anyway" on the pop-up box.
if it says "secured" it means you need a password and it needs to be provided by the person in charge, at my restaurant, me.
enter the password twice (one time on each one of the two boxes of the pop up box)
and you are ready.
the same applies to any other residential wireless network... sometimes you could even get internet from other people living nearby...

i have never once had to pay for a wireless connection, nor have i even run into a situation where i was asked to pay.
Your laptop will list the wifi connections it detects and will give you the option to connect. Most pesonal networks are encrypted with a WEP or WPA, but there are numerous unencrypted ones as well. I recently asked my Networking professor about the legality of personal wifi connections and it appears that at this point it is kind of a "grey area." People have been prosecuted for using others' personal wifi networks, but this is a rarity. As i see it, if someone does not encrypt their wireless network, they are giving permission for anyone to access it.
The world is turning into one giant globe of wireless connections. You'll find your wireless computing capabilities to be an enormous new convenience and you should have no problem finding connections wherever you go.

all i can tell you is some places you can pop right on, some you need to register for and some you have to pay for. as for starbucks, i dont know i never take my laptop there, but i sure drink the heck out of the coffee!!!!
oh, and for the person who said you have to pay EVERY where else, isnt true, i take mine with us when we travel and it seems almost anywhere you stop for gas or in town, you can pop onto SOMEONES internet...there seems to be a lot of people who do not have secure wireless, and those are the ones you can "borrow" while you are stopped!! its kewl!!
also in some states mcdonalds has wireless free and i could get that without even being in the building....we have a motor home and i just sit in the motorhome and see whats available wireless and pop onto the ones i can...

Some entire citys are wi-fi free zones. Some Starbucks are free but some you have to pay to get a code to use it. The Starbucks in Estes Park Colorado wants money to use their wi-fi. I won't pay those greedy bastards. If you want to use it at home you will need to purchase a router and some broadband server unless you can tap into your neighbors unprotected wi-fi system.

You usually have to pay to use the Wi-Fi at places like Starbucks, though its not very much, some areas have free public Wi-Fi in parks and libraries and places like that, you'd just have to check around in your area.

in case you think of it extremely is the on the spot factor of the relationship, attempt plugging your laptop directly to the modem out of your cyber web provider. If that provides you cyber web on your laptop then it extremely is something inclusive of your on the spot connection. have you ever had different on the spot connections in the past, utilising the comparable cyber web provider, modem and router. make beneficial your settings are the comparable then. nevertheless extra subjects, attempt taking laptop to Starbucks or different WiFi spot and notice in case you are able to connect there. it extremely is imprecise, sorry, yet while it nevertheless would not paintings call the internet provider back and that they must walk you thru it. If all else fails, touch somebody who can come on your place for a small value and get you all fastened up.

You need to set your TCP/IP to "obtain automatically," or something like that. Besides that, I think you have to pay at Starbucks, but anywhere free, you may have to manually connect it the first time. After that, you should connect automatically everytime you are near that connection.
