From my experience it's quite good. The metro system is extensive and runs frequently. There are also commuter trains that will take you to the suburban areas of the city.

It's also quite safe, although if you're from the U.S. and aren't familiar with the public transportation systems of other countries, you may be surprised initially by the buskers, panhandlers and salespeople on the train cars with you.

One of the cheapest and most effective systems in use. Especially compared to any of the following:

More efficient than: USA, UK, France, Thailand, Malaysia, Italy

Cheaper than: UK, USA, Germany, Italy

the metro is very good (and if you've been to italy you will know how clean it is in comparison), it's cheap (a lot more than the UK's), and the buses are alright, but it all depends on the traffic, there's room for improvement. the trains are good too

Is quite good, better than Barcelona's... most of most visited places have a metro station near them... and it isn't expensive...
