Those are all pretty good schools. What do you want to study?
Rice has a lot of good programs in science/math, I hear.
Cornell is pretty good at everything really. (Here's an article I found about Cornell academics: http://admitspit.wordpress.com/2006/11/09/how-x-does-academics-x-cornell/ )
And USC I know has really good music and performing arts programs. I guess it's a matter of what you want to study or what sort of environment you want to live in. (Ex: USC and Rice = hot and Cornell and Northwestern = cold)

They are all great schools -- not one of which is located in a place where I would want to live.

USC is not quite as good as the other three (except for film and one or two other majors) -- but if I had a friend who got into all four, the first question I would ask is "where do you want to live"?

If they don't care, then I would remind them that one of the school colors at Northwestern is purple -- and who wants that?
