Originally, punk was a reaction to the polished & pretty disco music that was big in the 70s. Punk itself has been watered down pretty well though through the decades though. A punk's intentions are probably to dress without having to worry about impressing others (even other punks), to enjoy music by a small band with a lot of heart but only three chords, and to drink cheap beer instead of expensive trendy microbrews. Punks generally are easy going, despite the stereotypes. They just want to be left alone to do their thing.

Goths branched off from punks early on. And like punks, they've been watered down & turned into a mall trend. They still wanted to do things their own way, but dressed a lot more elegantly. So instead of happy bouncy disco beats, they made dark, brooding music. Instead of clean white polyester suits like John Travolta's in Saturday Night Fever, they put on black clothes. Their intentions might be to look attractive (by goth standards), to appear cultured (so they *would* go for the expensive microbrews -- but not the trendy ones), and to have a good time with others who share their tastes.

Your question about intentions is a tough one to answer I guess. I can't speak for everyone's intention in either subculture. Some are doing it for attention. Some are doing it to piss off their parents. Some are doing it to fit in. Some are doing it to be themselves. Some are doing it because they like it.

Sounds just like any other group of people, doesn't it?

The punks intend to go to a cheap show later in the evening and complain about the teenyboppers and sellout bands. The goths intend to go out and buy more black candles and search the internet to see if the new Bauhaus album is out yet.

They are against conforming to what society views as normal and in truth what is normal the Amber and Crombie dressed girl or boy? ....I went through the goth phase years ago and I have to say I never thought it would fade...but it did. I preferred being the outcast of society I felt closer in bond to the friends I had an we each had our own reasons for feeling we did not want to be part of the "norm" society to us those were the fakes.

It is not scary if they choose to wear black or have three dozen pieces of silver on their body its a choice of expression.
