.... John Carew is MY hero!!!!!!!!!

http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=174051

The fact that is was John Carew, a player who struggled at the Chés and left for Turkey via the back door before resurfacing at Olympique Lyon as a habitual substitute, who left Cannavaro looking less-than-average has set Cannavaro’s critics off on a ‘told you so’ rant. After all, if a Norwegian sub can make the player look as leaden as a die-cast figurine does he deserve to be labelled the best player in the world?

AND GIVE IT TOO WHOM...HENRY, BUFFON OR RONALDINHO?????????

@andygurl
All I'm saying is that, there are a lot of players that deserve this award more than him, the players that were great in WC, CL and domestic league(Henry is one of them), every player can play good one month or seven games, he wasn't the best before the WC and he is not the best after the WC, but the fact is that Italy won the WC, so the tradition is that award goes to the player from a winning team........ OK I have no problem with that...... but we already have FIFA Golden Ball winner, the player that was the best in the WC 2006....... Zidane......... so this is what I don't understand...... Zidane was the best player of the WC, Cannavaro is NOT the best player in club competitions( he wasn't with Juve and he is not with Real)........ for what did he get Ballon d'Or for?????????

i think the underlying Q is, does he deserve it? the guy's got skills certainly but i could name several defenders who did a better job than him. he was hyped up by the media bec. italy needed a hero and sorry to say this, but there wasn't one who really stood out in the team, not even buffon bec. lehmann was light years better than him. jens had a LOT of defending to do and he shone at his job. maybe i'm blind, ignorant, biased, etc. but i saw all of italy's games xcept for that match with australia and i wasn't impressed with cannavaro at all. it was zambrotta and pirlo (to a lesser degree) who got my attention. cannavaro prob. got it bec. some ppl perversely felt something had to be rectified with the "premature" voting in the world cup which resulted in the "erroneous" giving of the golden ball to zidane and cannavaro having placed # 2 in that voting, was the logical beneficiary of the token act. that's ok if we confine it to performances in the wc but i get the sense that the ballon d'or had a wider criteria and as in the past, league performances had to be taken into account as well, not just the wc. which is where, in my limited understanding, this award goes terribly wrong bec. if that was done then the prize should have gone to someone else. anyway, that's just my opi and i'm no certainly no expert.

Maradona Jr, when do the nominations for this award close ? I'm just thinking of the period of time that performances are considered. Cannavaro had an amazing WC which showed his defensive capabilities and leadership qualities, but his form since moving to Real has been very ordinary. I'm assuming then that his time at Real has not been considered or a deciding factor. I like Cannavaro, don't get me wrong but outside of the WC his form wasn't outstanding and I believe that these types of awards should go to players who have been exceptional and showed outstanding form throughout the entire year. As to whom else to award it to, Buffon had a great WC but with his talent would be expected to be outstanding in Serie B. Henry is an exceptional talent but has been patchy with form also at times. Ronaldinho had a lousy WC. He looked uninterested more than lacking form and that continued until recent weeks when he has stepped up and found the solutions to be a force for Barca again. Then you have players like C Ronaldo, Messi etc who have on the whole been very productive and consistent and players like Eto'o who have been steady and undeniably deserving. I don't know who I would have chosen out of all these players though I would have leaned toward Henry or Eto'o myself. Sometimes it's the quiet achievers whom are most deserving but often overlooked. I guess what I'm saying is Cannavaro is a superb player, but I would not say he is the most complete or best player in the world at this time. With no disrespect intended toward him at all. Those that selected him felt he deserved it and as such I'm not offended at his selection.

Edit: Don't misinterpret what I'm saying, I agree with you. There are others more deserving. And all people talk about in regards to him is his WC performance. I'm just saying it's a hard award to pick and I would choose Buffon over him personally.

Cannavaro is one of the best players in the world, no doubt. He is having a lack of form and Carew as a great striker took advantage on it.Even if Cannavaro was a god at World Cup the Golden Ball belongs to the perfect athlete and human Zinedine Zidane...Miss you Zizou....

No definately not. All players have bad games in there career and that doesn't mean it should be taken away from him, that is just plain stupid. He perfectly deserves and that's just what he's going to get, so keep dreaming :D

you sure ask a lot of questions about Cannavaro, do you love him or something

First of all unless it is a World Cup game they can not take away the Golden Ball from him. he deserves it because he was the best player in the World Cup he is a World class player.

The tournament did no longer seem that undesirable so a approaches (i'm observing it precise now), and Cannavaro truthfully does not make it seem he became into the worst participant. by ways, that's Cannavaro's thirty third birthday immediately. =)

I love it, I love it, I love it... 100% agreement with your statement.

Ronaldinho deserves it, with all the injured players at Barca, he is doing the job of a workhorse right now.

Titi Henry isn't really steady in his performance, he is up and down, up and down.

Buffon missed to save all of the penalty kicks at the WC. Coupet could have done better.

LOL. Lyon makes Real Madrid look stupid sometimes! John Carew is a perfect example....making Canna sweat like crazy. They should give the award to HENRY! :]]]

They should take the Golden ball away from Cannavaro and give it to Buffon. after all, he's supposed to come in second place in the graduatory.

they shouldn't. every football player will have a bad game. if u look at zidane, the 2006 world cup final game was his worst performance in his career but the 1998 world cup final game was one of his best performance in his career.
