Extreme POVERTY in the USA!!!?

I thought america was the richest country, i mean from gdp, or individual wealth, but i just found out that there is actually poverty, during hurricane katrina, some people were so poor, THEY COULDNT AFFORD TO LEAVE! I mean here in the UK there is some poverty, but its minor, the rich people in the usa are RICK, but the poor are POOR!! How can it be the greatest country for freedom.

Freedom and wealth are two different things.

Wealth varies ALOT! Yes we have some of the richest people in the world, but at the same time there are also people living in extreme poverty. There are also many people everywhere in between.

But at the same time wealth does not make one free. There are many poor people who have more freedom than the rich people. Of course this is not always the case either. There really isn't that much of a correlation between the two.

There are alot of factors with this. There are alot of poor people who are mentally challenged and can't find a job, get a job or keep a job. There are alot of poor people who are addicted to illegal drugs. They can't work a job, but they can get money for their drugs? There are alot of old people who didn't save enough money when they were working and are poor now. Many poor people in the USA had an opportunity to get a free public education through high school, but chose to drop out of school and became poor..Their choice. Another issue is that the minimum wage in the US is $7.45, which is $15,500 annually if you work 40 hours a week, which is still poverty.

Go read about the janitors' union when it had a peaceful protest in Houston, Texas. The pigs had horses step on people, the protestors were beaten, tazered and had their legal rights violated.

The pigs thought they could get away with it because janitors are among the lowest paid people; there's video of the abuse available on human rights sites. Some who protested make US$20 per DAY (they only get parttime and minimum wage, no health or medical benefits). And these people _work_, they're not "welfare queens" (who don't actually exist).


The "american dream" is a nightmare because for a few to be rich, a lot have to be poor.

extreme is subjective, a damaging american interior reason properly off in comparison to most of the planet. Grew up in a damaging enjoyed ones and have been homeless earlier, so specific, I definitely have experienced poverty and it sucks.

Most people who live in poverty in America have only themselves to blame. Who has a higher unemployment rate America Or England?.....I can tell you that it's England. But Britts don't sit around whinning with their hands out wanting free money. They get off their ***'s and do something for themselves instead of wanting the government to take care of them.

With freedom comes responsibility for yourself. I have a special attachment to New Orleans, and what happened in the 9th ward still breaks my heart. I feel for those people daily. However, we have a work ethic here in the USA and expect people to work for their money. Some people just are too lazy to do that. I hate to have to say it, but it's true. They collect welfare, continue to have kids to collect more welfare, and generally don't try to better themselves

poverty is everywhere, including the US. i'm sure there's more poverty in the UK than you realize. it is unforturnate, but the rich seem to get richer and the poor seem to get poorer. we may be free, but it doesn't mean we are all rich. most of us work very hard to earn the little we have.
