There is a wondeful book entitled "Why Men Earn More." It was written by a former director of the National Organization for Women. It appears that women may in fact earn more than men, all things equal. In some fields, such as software engineering, women earn 40% more than men. However, in self-employment, women statistically earn less than men, the differences being behavioral. It was a wonderful work in the economics of pay in the United States. It found 23 determinants of demand for compensation only one of which was gender based -- physically beautiful young women earn statistically more than anyone else and this pay differential lasts their entire lifetime.

All of the remainder were from behavior.

I saw the author on C-SPAN doing a presentation. It was in a room of consultants I believe. He asked behavioral questions of the group. Consistently men would stand up with an occaisional woman standing up. Rarely did women stand up twice and very rarely three times. Each of these questions implied a higher demand for that person and consequently a higher wage.

The book has great references as well.
