There is only one reason. To protect the children from the husband leaving and not taking care of them. It is kind of archaic because these days the wife can work and take care of the children herself which is often the case. But with a marriage, the law tries to protect the children after the parents split.
There is no other reason to get married. Relationships are probably better without the government saying that it is a legal union. It is better to be able to leave whenever you want without the government being involved.

Because if the same things are expected of me if we are living together --- then we are going to be married. I ain't having kids(risking my health/life), providing sex, housekeeping etc. for a man who ain't my husband.... you can do that if you want to...
I asked a friend this --- if living together is better - then why do you still need his or her ok to do stuff ... like go away on a trip with friends? why do you or him still have to call in each day (keep tabs on each other) ---- if you going to act married then why not be married?

If you truly love someone, and want to spend the rest of your life with them, then you should get married. It makes them feel secure in your love, and you in theirs. It's a "commitment" to that person, and signifies that you'll always be there for them. We know that it doesn't always work out that way, but I still believe in marriage. I intend to do it again myself, when the time is right!

It is a big decision in everyone's life. It is a bond of two people you truely care for each other and will do nothing to hamper that scared bond that they have. Even in today's world a lot of marriages ends up in divorce, their are still alot off people who believe in it.
I guess the decision is yours, if you think you will be able to commit to someone and stay committed. I believe that you should not hurt someone if you don't want them to hurt you. That's my thoughts anyway, every one is different, the decision is yours.

When you find your soulmate...you'll be able to answer your own question. Marriage is the greatest feeling of all..if you've found the right person. It's a union of two souls that would not otherwise be united. Hardest thing to do....is find the "right" person. My mom always told me...every pot has a lid....just gotta sort through the lids till ya find the one that fits perfectly!

Because it shows commitment. It is a lot easier to walk away when the going gets tough without a marriage certificate. It also protects you legally should things not work out.
