Deep Breathing

Close your eyes and take a slow, deep breath, inhaling through your nose. Let your belly (abdomen)--rather than your chest--expand as you inhale deeply. Slowly exhale by gently blowing out through your mouth. Clear your mind and focus on the sound and feeling of your breathing. Let your entire body relax.

Remember to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Repeat this pattern for 5 to 10 minutes until you feel calm.

Visualization

Visualization allows you to relax and relieve stress by focusing your mind on a pleasant image or experience. Before you begin, make yourself comfortable sitting or lying down in a quiet place. If you want, dim the lights or put on soft music.

Close your eyes and imagine yourself in a favorite place where you feel safe and carefree. This might be a tropical island, a meadow filled with blooming wildflowers or a mountain cabin. Let your senses enjoy the sights, sounds and smells--the blue sky, the sun warming your skin, the refreshing scent of pine trees. Focus on the scene while breathing slowly and relaxing completely. After 10 to 30 minutes, gradually open your eyes.

ask your doctor to explain what she is doing. sometimes just knowing makes it less stressfull. see if your doctor has a mirror so you can watch....makes it less passive and you feel like you are involved in some way.

just make sure you take deep breaths. or take a friend to hold your hand. practice relaxing at home. learn to stop whatever you are doing and relax your muscles. If you can do this, then you can fake out your body into relaxing for the three minutes it takes for your exam (if your exam takes more than a few minutes I would ask why).

Hi I have the same problem, I just lay back and try and relax and keep my eyes closed the whole time,it helps to keep em closed for real. And dont tense up downt there because that really makes it worse. Just remember it only lasts a few minutes.

You could talk to her a couple days ahead of time, tell her your experiences, and ask her to prescribe a mild muscle relaxant. You will likely need a ride home but this can help you to avoid cramping and tensing up. I never get a pap without it.

Just talk to your gyno. it's more difficult to tense your muscles while carrying on a conversation. My gyno has always done this and it works for me.
