I would suggest that you go to one of those hobby stores that they can build them. They can get a bit expensive but well worth the money.

There R a number of things to consider. First is Electric or gas. Second is cost. Third is Street Or Off Road. They range in price from $69.95 to $1500.oo on up. The lower price ones are usually very slow in speed & are designed to run around the yard or a driveway. As you progress through the price range they become faster & performance increases. Some can reach speeds in excess of 60mph. Electric cars are not very loud. Gas powered are loud & they go vroom, vroom. That's what guys love to hear. The first one I bought was a mid range electric car & enjoyed it until I heard a gas one run. Then it was Hold the mortgage payment I've gotta buy a new car. Highend electric cars are comparable in speed but there's nothing more pleasing to a fella's ears as a highly turned gas engine turning @ 25,00Rpm.

Here are some sites to check out to give you a better idea what's available.

The majority now come ready to run right out of the box already assembled & include the Radio & the rest of the electronics except the batteries.
Stay away from Radio Shack & Walmart specials. They are overpriced & cheaply built. If it breaks you own a $100 piece of junk. Buy one from a reputable Hobby shop where all replacement parts are available right down to the nuts & bolts hardware & has a service department & service technicians available.

It depends on what he wants if for. If he is competitive, buy him an expensive (read: $400-$1000) car at a hobby store. If he will use it until the batteries wear out and then leave it in the closet, just spend about $100 at Toys R Us.

The Radio Shack cars are faster usually with a longer range.... If its powered by a battery pack get an extra pack so one can be charging while the other is in use....
