There was a car featured on 'Fifth Gear' a few weeks ago that went from 0-60 in 1 second!
It lives in Wolverhampton as I recall.
It was a Vauxhall Victor or something like it.... of course the owner had fixed it up a bit (9.5 ltr twin turbo engine, etc). It is officially the world's fastest street legal car!
I can't find a mention of it on the 'Fifth gear' website, but there is a download on a 'fifth Gear' fansite...

Currently the official fastest production car is the veyron as said. And also as said the current fastest street legal car is in the UK and it's a vauxhall viva I believe pushing out 2200bhp. Built by one guy in his shed. How very British!

This is really an open question. Are you talking production car? Modified? What? most top fuel dragsters will reach (assuming you have the road for it) top speeds of 480 MPH. they go though the 1/4 mile at 300 MPH. their speed is only limited by the gearing of the transmission. If you’re talking record speeds the speed of sound will tromp top fuels. Several jet cars have been recorded at over 800 MPH on land. So depending on what you are looking for I have put out some sites.

Fastest Car is the Car is the one that can beat the speed of sound i think it was called the SSX has the land speed record.
if you mean road car.. well i think the Bristol beats the bugatti..

Sorry Bugatti Lovers... Britain has taken that slot again recently. I read in the paper last week that Bristol Cars have produced a new model - the Bristol Blenhein Fighter I believe its called, that will be even faster
