There are alot of small animals there are rodents and some reptiles can be classed as that as well

All rodents need a home-
Wire cages are good for ventilation but some bars are to widly spread so the pet can get out! Wood chips also go everywhere unless it has a deep tray!
Rotastak cages are excelent. They are basically plastic cages with tubes that can be moved to anywhere in the cage. They are quite pricey though!
Aquariums are not so good as it does not provide enough ventilation but for gerbils its good if it has a mesh top as they love to make tunnels.
Wooden boxes are bad for rodents as they can chew through it and escape.

Carefresh is actually better than sawdust as it eliminates odor and saves the trees (not made from trees) but if you still want to use woodchips fine!

Water should always be supplied in a drip bottle because rodents tend to urinate and tip over the bowls of water. most rodents do not drink much so dont woory if you find they dont.

Gerbils

Gerbils are good pets. They are friendly and exicing. They love to burrow so maybe an aqurium would be best. They eat rodent food or specially designed gerbil food. In the cage you can put deep sawdust, bedding (shredded tissue paper), food, Water from a drip bottle, maybe some branches to climb and chew on and some toys. they are social so need to be kept in pairs.

Hamsters

Hamsters are popular pets and can be kept in any of the above cages. There are many hamster breeds some of them are: Chinese hamster, dwarf hamster, syrian hamster. There are lots of hamster foods avalible on the market. In the cage it would be good if you put a wood block so they can have somthing to chew on. hamsters love to roll around in a run-around-ball but dont leave them in their for too long. They enjoy an excercise wheel in their cage. They must be kept by themselves as they are solitary but dwarf and chinease can be kept in pairs.
Mice

I personally have mice and i love them. They can be kept in any of the above cages but be careful with wire cages as they can squeeze through the tiniest of spaces! They eat rodent food or specially prepared mouse food. They are very curious and love it if you can chance the setup of the cage now and again. They need a chew block to keep their teeth in shape. they love hamster balls and wheels. Toilet roll tubes are appreicated as a toy.

Rats

rats are very friendly and not like the wild breed vermin. they crave human attention. and love to be let out of the cage. they can learn their names and do tricks like a dog. They need to be kept in a big cage which can be very expensive preferably more than 1 level. Wire is best.
RAts are social and need t be kept in pairs or more. Males are bigger and a bit lazier. Females are smaller and more "hyper" lol They eat rat food or rodent (try to get rat)

Chinchilla

Chinchillas are expensive. They need a dust bath a few times a week the dust can go every where.
The need a big cage with branches. Chinchilla food is a must. they are friendly but they are bigger than most other rodents. They can be let out to run but they chew on everything and poop everywhere. iF you handle them roughly there fun the get messy.

Guinea pig

Do not feed your guinea pig rabbit food, even if it's cheaper! It's not the same! Unlike rabbit food, guinea pig food contains vitamin C, which is vital for a guinea pig's health. Its good to feed them oranges sometimes. You can let them out for a run you can even put then in a run in the garden like for a rabbit they will enjoy grazing on the grass.

Which ever pet you decide to get reasearch it first and i hope you enjoy your time together!

Hamsters & Gerbils are good; they still need play time out of the cage but in my opinion; not as much as a dog or cat. They sleep durring the day & cleaning isnt that hard of a task; however be sure to clean the cage weekly in order to prevent a dirty cage, sick animal, & bad smelling room.

If you have a lot of extra time on your hands; I would recomend a ferret - I have one & I think they are the greatest animals ever. However; they require a lot of time & work. They should be out of the cage for at least 2 - 4 hours a day for play time; you will need to ferret proof your house, train them to use the litter box, clean the litter box daily [ my personal choice due to how much they poop ] & make sure you have enough money to spend on everything they require; a propper cage, food bowls, water bottles, lots of toys, a hammock, litter, food, vitamens, vet bills & the actual ferret. They are kind of expensive animals but their personalities are wonderful; they are very curious & get into everything so make sure you have time & patience if you choose this animal.

A few other suggestions are : Guinea pigs, a rabbit [ they poop a lot ], birds, a snake, or maybe a chinchilla. Good luck :]

I've had both hamsters and gerbils as a kid.

I found hamsters to be very grumpy. They like to sleep a lot. They get kinda testy if you wake them up and want to play with them and may actually bite you.

Gerbils are very playful and always up for playing. They don't mind being woken up if they are going to get some play time in. I never had a gerbil bite me. Although, they look more rat-like and aren't as cute as hamsters.

If you want to know which is the better pet...I feel it is the gerbil.

Get a pair of kittens from the animal shelter. Two don't cost a whole lot more than 1, except for vet visits. But two cats will entertain each other when you're not gone, and that may prevent a lot of destructive behavior. And you can leave cats for a weekend with no problems if you travel. A day inside is no problem for a cat - it's just a chance for another nap.

I would recommend getting a couple of rats. Rats are wonderful pets who love their people more than other rodents. They like coming out to play, and many will let you hold them and pet them (unlike some other rodents). They are the smartest of all rodents, and can even learn their names. They aren't too messy. They're a bit bigger than other rodents, meaning they can't escape as easily and they can be held more easily than other rodents.

Make sure that if you get rats, you spend at least 1 hour per day with them (outside of their cage).

Also, please get more than one rat, as they are very social animals and need to be around other rats. Just be sure that they are all males or all females.

I had eight rats at one time, and they were the greatest pets I've ever had (and I've had a number of dogs, a snake, fish, and a bird).

Please consider getting rats. They are wonderful pets. Do a little research online and you'll learn everything you need to know about rats.

Hamsters are fun to have, but they can be a little mean. Gerbils are sweet. Guinea pigs are sweet, too depending on which one.

Guinea pigs, they hardly ever bite, they are vocally expressive, and if you breed them they don't have large litters, and they are born very well developed compared to the others, almost ready to play with. They aren't the escape artists that some of the others are. All the mentioned critters have to be protected from your own colds or flus. Have clean hands always when you deal with them and never sneeze on them or on their homes.

I suggest a rat. We had one before. He came out and followed me around the house. You can put them on your shoulder and carry them with you. They like attention. All the hamsters I had never liked to be petted. They just wanted to run around.

I like a lot of little animals.. If you have a moderate climate i would say chinchilla's not to hot not to cold...or a ferret... or even a sugar glider it is always good to get two so your pet has a companion.
