I started in high school basically because it was "cool" but now I do it out of habit (not addiction) or because I am bored or stressed.

I smoke to relax when I am tense, even though that smoking makes your heart beat faster, when you are smoking at that moment you do not think about that. It a drug of choice. I know it is not healthy for me or anyone that inhales my smoke, the effects double on the non smoker. But for now I am a smoker and will stay that way until I decide to stop. I started to be fashionable back in the early 1970's. It was the cool thing to do, and I just did not want to stop. The only times I did stop was when I got pregnant, as soon as the Doctor said you are pregnant, I would quit the same day until my baby was about 5 or 6 months, I did this repeatedly, because I have 4 children.
So in reality I know I can quit, but that is my only vise, I don't drink alcohol, or do any type of drugs. I do the worst thing, smoke. I am a responsible smoker I do not smoke in the streets, I only smoke at home in my backyard. I live in Florida and that is good because it doesn't get cold to go outside. Excellent question, it makes you look at yourself and see how foolish one is. Speaking about myself. Thanks for the question.

it started because it was the in thing to do and because we were not given the facts and people had smoked for countless generations ..and it wasn't a problem but now it is yes I accept it may have been a contributing factor to lung cancer etc.. .....but now I am a leper will probably die of hypothermia instead ..but what are you none smokers going to do when the revenue stops coming in who are you going to blame next ..think smokers are a smoke screen and secretly you all loved the odours any party I have every been to recently when all the smokers were freezing their butts of all the none smokers were ther also does this give a message or what

I started smoking when I was 12, I am now 49, I smoke 15 a day, gave up for a while, but I like a cigarette, yes I know all the health risks - reckon I have paid for the NHS by now with all the taxes on a packet of fags. I started to fit in with the 'in crowd' in school.

I started when i was about 13 when my older brother offered me one & i continued until 2 years ago when i stopped.

So that was about 24 years of smoking. i'm glad i quit, its rather a waste of money.

In 2 years i have saved around £800 and that was from smoking hand rolling, i can imagine a packet smoker would have spent double that in the same time period.

I started when I was 20, my husband smoked a lot, I bought him a pack of cigarettes and a pack for me, I started right there bcs I wanted to show him how easy it was to quit, turns out that 5 years later I'm hooked to the thing, I only smoke 3 cigarettes a day, I do it now bcs after my husband passed away (not bcs of the cigarettes) I started having a lot of anxiety, smoking calms me down a lot and I can continue working or doing whatever I'm supposed to be doing at that moment.

Smoking is an addiction. I was addicted to tobacco of 30 years. Don't need to be a scientist to figure out how harmful cigarette smoke it. It will kill you. In the end it will. I should know. I used to go up to the hospital for oxygen, leave there and have a smoke. I just made up my mind one day and that was it. Do i miss it? You bet i do. Will i smoke again? Hell no.

I started when i was 13. It was the coo, thing to do....

I started when I was on patrol in Northern Ireland. We had been shot at and two mates were hit in the head (but survived). We got back to base and the lads all lit up because were were a bit shook up. I asked one of the lads for one and I started then. I have stopped a few times but start again when under pressure or things are not going right. Its a filthy habit and I wish I had the will power to stop.

Speaking for myself, I [still] smoke because it's an addiction. Nicotine is addictive. Why did I start? Because I was 16 and had nothing better to do and thought that I would appear cool and rebellious.

yeah. i'm the same way. people can't deal with me now when i don't smoke. i started just simply because i wanted to. i said i wasn't addicted for a year or two. i tstill believe i wasn't. now i am very addicted. i believe a lot of the reason i still do is the habit of having to have something in my hand or mouth so much. i wanna quit, just can't find the will power to do it right now.
