Ok, I bought an 86 Trans Am. The person before me put a 350 in it. The 350 came out of an 84 chevy 1/2 ton van. The car has the stock tranny, and as far as I'm aware, the stock starter. The problem I'm having is I was getting a lot of starter noise, and the engine wouldn't turn over. I looked at the flywheel, and 3/4 of every tooth is sheared off. When I compared the flywheel with the starter it looks the starter gear can't fully engage with the flywheel. Do I need to change something?

You will probably need a new flywheel now that it is chewed up. If the starter you were using is from the trans am; switch it to a Chevy small block starter.

Great thing about Chevy is you can take a 350 from a van and put it in your TA. You can also take the TA motor and put it in the Van. It really doesn't matter. What you are looking at is a bad starter. Replace the flywheel so you can get a good catch on it when you start. You also need to replace the starter. If you still get noise the ignition switch will need to be replaced. It's not completely moving out of the start position.

I would get the flywheel for the car. The flywheels were probably the same but there is really no way to know without knowing what transmission was in the van.

if flywheel gears is shear off then you have to shim the starter. also, you need a new flywheel to replace damage one.

when you install the new starter sometimes it needs to be shimmed to fit correctly when you get a new flywheel take the old one with you to get the right size and bolt pattern
