Life is all about experiences. I think if your wife can enjoy the weed without affecting the child, then so be it. I would hope that she can be discreet enough not to be found out by the child. If she cannot, then she does have a major problem (i.e. sitting around all day getting high, even when she knows there's a possibility of "getting caught"). Life is short. I am not sure that 1/2 of the population is depressed, I think we have simply placed ourselves in stressful lifestyles. Every man to his own escape, as long as it is not hurting another...

I wouldn't stress about it. If she keeps a small quanitity on hand, it's misdemeanor at best and most courts won't prosecute a 50+ year old woman for anything less than a pound.
In my opinion, if she gets out of bed in the morning and has a functional life... there isn't a problem. If she requires it to get through the day... a lifestyle change should be in order.
That's all I think it comes down to, legal issues aside. If you use it to turn the lights on, more power to you. If you use it to turn the lights off and hide... you should consider your options.
At the same time, I honestly don't think there is anything wrong with a 50+ year old woman smoking. Don't listen to the bonehead drones talking about it being wrong and turning her in or whatever stupid ideas they spew.
Wanna know what's wrong? Menopause. It comes at that age. Menopause is wrong. Dealing with a menopausal woman that's totally out of control is infinitely worse than a pothead... soooo much more expensive too, because no drugs actually "work" to smooth that one out... if pot is doing the trick for her, count your blessings.
Your daughter will discover the habit. She'll either choose to join in openly, hide it from you, hate the effects and not use it or whatever other course of action. You don't have the power to choose for your daughter. You have the power to inform and influence her choices. Since this is the case, I think you should be open with your daughter about it and accept whatever she has to say in response.
If you're wife is 50, your kid has encountered pot. It's a fact. Let go of the denial long enough to face the situation as it is, be responsible.

I think drugs should be legal, but I think they are a bad idea in a home with children. Long term dependence on any drug is not a good thing.
You are right to be woried about your daughter. Do you really want to teach her that the best way to deal with problems is a chemical escape? Also she will have issues dealing with an absent mother. Although there physically, your wife is absent in terms of being a mother.
Although your wife has some good points, She is making excuses. When medically supervised anti-depressants are given, it is usually with the thought that they will get you over a short period of time until you can learn to cope and deal with your problems effectivly. Not a lifetime crutch.
If you love and care for your wife and family and yourself, make sure you get the help you need.
Your wife is NOT THE ONLY ONE with a problem. It's a whole family issue.
Check out AL-ANON. Althought originally for families of alcoholics, the issues are the same and you will learn a lot.

All this talk about gunja beiin a gateway drug Ha! If any thing is a gateway drug it'd be tobacco and booze! It's way easier to get. and kill's more people than all drugs cobined each year!
The key is, Don't get high every day, Moderation is the key.

Antidepressant drugs "dull your senses"? Well, this is a load of BS. Pot dulls your senses so much more than any antidepressant I've ever been on. You're right to be worried - but unfortunately there isn't much you can do about it. It's a habit that's very hard to give up. I'd say, as long as it doesn't interfere significantly in your family's affairs, just let it go. It's not the worst habit one could be engaged in.

Your daughter already knows her Moms habit. The people she's around know it too.The smell of marijuana is on every thing in your house, even if she tokes outside.Your wife sweats the smell. What is making her so miserable that weed is her only out? What excuse did she use when she was young? How old was she when she had the young daughter?Maybe the weed makes her feel young. You should never of allowed the habit to get started,it's past the worry stage. How old is TOO old to be a weed head?Sorry I'm at a loss.........

Aw hell....no big deal. In fact does she make it a point to hide her use from the kid? If so then fine. Eventually though kids grow up and the old "towel under the door with the shower running" doesn't help. If it relaxes her good. Buddy...she could be doing something stupid like coke, crack, smack or meth. Alttle smoke is okay. Just ensure she takes great pains to hide her habit from the kid.

young daughter? how young if your wife is in her 50's? if she is over 18, she is old enough to know.
it's not a habit now, but sure, when i retire i plan on sitting on my porch with my husband in dual rocking chairs on a small famlike cottage and smoke away.
but then there there is what whole legal issue. i really don't want to end up in jail.

I dont think its a big deal that she smokes, I mean its marijuana not crack. But I do agree that she needs to keep this away from your daughter. I'm sure there are plenty of parents who do drugs and the kids dont know. You just have to do it right.

No.Smoking pot may stave off dementia and Alzheimer's Disease. Tell the daughter the truth, if she asks.
Smoking dope is not as destructive as drinking alcohol. As far as its being illegal: so is exceeding the speed limit (which is probably more dangerous).
